Account on bigbang: what that means

Congratulation: your account is now on our server "bigbang".

We consider two cases:

or

Users who have been migrated from sirius

The most important thing regards your password. Some machines still use NIS and get their information from sirius, some use NIS+ and get their information from bigbang. There is no connection between the two Information Systems. Thus if you wish to change your password you will have to do it twice: once for 'sirius' dependent machines and once for 'bigbang'-dependent ones. You can see a list of machines relying on bigbang following this link. or using the command ypwhich. The answer will be "sirius" for NIS machines otherwise it will complain as follows:
ypwhich: can't communicate with ypbind
obviously this is a machine using NIS+.

The migration requires two steps:

  1. moving your home directory to a disk on bigbang (probably already done if you are reading this)
  2. switching to the new .cshrc and .login files

Home directory: from sirius to bigbang

Basically you should not have noticed it. Everything should work as usual.
One thing is new: QUOTA has been introduced.

You can check how much disk space you have used and how much is still at your disposition with the command quotack

Example:

deneb:ballisti:[ballisti]:73 % quotack

QUOTA STATUS              Space          Files                    Status
                      ----------     ---------   -----------------------
  * Current Usage      904606 kB         24519                        OK
  * Soft Quota        1200000 kB        120000
  * Hard Quota        1400000 kB        140000

deneb:ballisti:[ballisti]:74 %

If you need more disk space please contact your system administrator
(at present Ray Ballisti, tel. 22753, e-mail: ballisti@ifh.ee.ethz.ch)

If you are also using a PC you can attach your UNIX Home_dir as a network disk. Now you can change from \\sirius\user_name to \\bigbang\user_name.

switching to the new .cshrc and .login files

Generally this step will be discussed with you before. For some of you there will be no special problem. Others have done some editing to their .cshrc and/or .login files, and we should discuss the matter together. Please contact me:
Ray Ballisti, tel. 22753, e-mail: ballisti@ifh.ee.ethz.ch

Without this step your .cshrc and .login files will not be readed on machines depending from bigbang because the /usr/share/lib/adm is not available there. See above on how to know which machine is depending from bigbang and which one not.

you are a new user

No special remark is needed for new users.

More about QUOTA can be found above.
