Free yourself from your workingplace using Eudora

Problem description and solution

You want to access your mails from different locations.
You are not allowed to keep all your mails on the server's INBOX file.
You cannot access the subfolders created by Eudora on the harddisk of your PC in your office.

How to reach the goal stated above

The following instructions have been tested on a PC with Windows XP and Eudora version 6.0.0.9.
I suppose that Eudore is already installed, which is true for most of you.

Do NOT start Eudora, quit a running one.
Click the right mouse key on your window's background and
follows the New Menu on the right side and choose Shortcut.
In this way you are asking to create a new shortcut.
Enter the path for the program (Eudora) to be started.
In my case it was: D:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe
Fill in the other fields (name of the shortcut, etc.) and click Finish.

Read now carefully:

First connect to your UNIX home directory as a Network Drive.
Using the Window Explorer or the My Computer window:
pull down the Tools menu and choose Map Network Drive
Choose a Drive Letter (I make an example with the letter K)
Enter the Folder Name as follows:
where user_name is your UNIX login name (for instance: ballisti).
Click on Finish or on different user name as necessary.
If you do not want to use the directory mail_folders which is on every UNIX account
then please create your directory in which you want to put all the Eudora data files.
In the following I will use the default mail_folders.
Click the right mouse on the shortcut icon and choose Properties from the pulldown menu.
In the Target field you will have to enter TWO strings surrounded by quotation (") and separated by a blank space.
The first string is the same as the path given while creating the shortcut above.
In our example: "D:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe"
WITH the quotation marks!
Type in a space (blank).
The second string is the directory just created before on your home directory
as it is seen by the Network Drive, i.e. without the UNIX /home/user_name prefix:
In our example: "K:\mail_folders"
Enter the directory in the Start in field WITHOUT the quotation.
i.e. in our example: K:\mail_folders
Leave unchanged the next two fields:
Click OK

Configuration of the Eudora started with the new shortcut

Double click the new shortcut. Eudora should start.
Choose Options from the pull down menu Tools.
The following entries should be filled as follows:

Getting Started
- Mail Server [Incoming]: mail.ifh.ee.ethz.ch
- SMTP Server [Outgoing]: mail.ifh.ee.ethz.ch
Checking Mail
- Mail server: mail.ifh.ee.ethz.ch
- Secure Socket when receiving: Never (This is important!)
Incoming Mail
- Server configuration: IMAP
- IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix: /mail/user_name (Don't ask me why..)
- Authentication style: password
Sending Mail
- Domain to add to unqualified address: ifh.ee.ethz.ch
- SMTP server: mail.ifh.ee.ethz.ch
- Secure Sockets when Sending: Never (This is important!)
Click OK and restart Eudora.

Some useful recommandations

Make a copy of your sensitive (important) mail folders:
Click on the Special ---> Compact Mailboxes command at least once a day
This procedure will remove all the unusable space in all of the mailboxes
so that the TOC and MBX match exactly in their representation of the actual data.
The In, Out, and Trash mailboxes are the primary mailboxes in Eudora.
These mailboxes are loaded into memory upon startup of Eudora - so if
they get excessively large, you risk causing slowdowns in Eudora and
you may increase the chances of Data corruption.
It is a good practice to routinely Empty Trash and to transfer
old messages from the In and Out boxes to other mailboxes in Eudora.
Do not leave messages in the Inbox mailbox if possible.
This is the one mailbox in the common mail folder on the server
and should not be allowed to grow too big.
